This chapter provides an overview of Middleware as a Service (MWaaS).
Middleware as a Service (MWaaS) provides a complete application development and deployment environment. It delivers a complete a complete runtime environment comprised of all services necessary to deploy and run an enterprise-class application. MWaaS facilitates cheaper and faster deployment of applications as developers need not deal with the complexities of the underlying hardware and software components.
Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control 12c offers a single management tool for creating, monitoring and managing a private or public MWaaS environment. MWaaS delivers a complete runtime environment comprised of all services necessary to deploy and run an enterprise-class application, including services such as application hosting, persistence store, application integration and APIs that enable programmatic access to additional computing services that might be required by an application. Identity services are an example of APIs available within a PaaS environment.
MWaaS in Enterprise Manager extends the Oracle Private Cloud Management solution by:
Providing Automated Discovery and Baselining of Resources: Enterprise Manager provides an integrated workflow for agent deployment and target discovery on selected auto discovered hosts.
Capacity and Consolidation Planning: Generates consolidation plans based on resource distribution and utilization. Details on consolidation ratio, destination server utilization, server mapping, and so on are provided.
Providing a Centrally Managed Software Repository: Enterprise Manager provides a central repository for storing and retrieving images, scripts, and middleware provisioning profiles. See Loading Provisioning Profiles to the Software Library for details.
Metering for Chargeback and Reporting: Resource consumption can be tracked and users can be charged based on different Chargeback plans. The Chargeback feature provides in depth historical and on demand reports.
Self Service Provisioning: Enterprise Manager provides an out-of-the-box portal for cloud users. Self Service users can monitor and administer services with minimal or no administrator intervention.
Monitoring and Administering: The Middleware Self Service Portal provides centralized monitoring of the cloud infrastructure and underlying resources. Users can monitor requests and failure rates and identify potential bottlenecks.
