Observium<\/strong>\u00a0is a PHP\/MySQL driven Network Observation and Monitoring application, that supports a wide range of operating systems\/hardware platforms including, Linux, Windows, FreeBSD, Cisco, HP, Dell, NetApp and many more. It seeks to present a robust and simple web interface to monitor health and performance of your network.<\/p>\n

Install Observium in CentOS\/RHEL<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Observium gathers data from devices with the help of SNMP and display those data in graphical pattern via a web interface. It makes hefty use of the RRDtool package. It has a number of thin core design goals, which includes collecting as much historical information about devices, being totally auto-discovered with slight or no manual interruption, and having a very simple yet powerful interface.<\/p>\n

    This article will guide you on how to install\u00a0Observium<\/strong>\u00a0on\u00a0RHEL<\/strong>,\u00a0CentOS<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Scientific Linux<\/strong>, the supported version is\u00a0EL<\/strong>\u00a0(Enterprise Linux)<\/strong>\u00a06.x<\/strong>. Currently, Observium unsupported for\u00a0EL<\/strong>\u00a0release\u00a04<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a05<\/strong>\u00a0respectively. So, please don\u2019t use following instructions on these releases.<\/p>\n

    RPMForge<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0EPEL<\/strong>\u00a0is a repository that provides many add-on rpm software packages for RHEL, CentOS and Scientific Linux. Let\u2019s install and enable these two community based repositories using the following serious of commands.<\/p>\n

    On i386 Systems<\/h5>\n
    # yum install wget\r\n# wget http:\/\/pkgs.repoforge.org\/rpmforge-release\/rpmforge-release-0.5.3-1.el5.rf.i386.rpm\r\n# wget http:\/\/download.fedoraproject.org\/pub\/epel\/6\/i386\/epel-release-6-8.noarch.rpm\r\n# wget http:\/\/apt.sw.be\/RPM-GPG-KEY.dag.txt\r\n# rpm --import RPM-GPG-KEY.dag.txt\r\n# rpm -Uvh rpmforge-release-0.5.3-1.el5.rf.i386.rpm\r\n# rpm -Uvh epel-release-6-8.noarch.rpm<\/pre>\n

    Step 2: Install Needed Software Packages<\/h3>\n
    Now let\u2019s install the required software packages needed for Observium.<\/p>\n
    # yum install httpd php php-mysql php-gd php-snmp vixie-cron php-mcrypt \\\r\nphp-pear net-snmp net-snmp-utils graphviz subversion mysql-server mysql rrdtool \\\r\nfping ImageMagick jwhois nmap ipmitool php-pear.noarch MySQL-python<\/pre>\n

    Install Needed Packages<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
    If you wish to monitor virtual machines, please install \u2018libvirt<\/strong>\u2018 package.<\/p>\n
    # yum install libvirt<\/pre>\n
    Step 3: Downloading Observium<\/h3>\n
    For your information, Observium has two following editions<\/p>\n
      \n
    1. Community\/Open Source Edition<\/b>: This edition is freely available for download with less features and few security fixes.<\/li>\n
    2. Subscription Edition<\/b>: This edition is comes with additional features, rapid feature\/fixes, hardware support and easy to use SVN-based release mechanism.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
      Firstly navigate to the\u00a0\/opt<\/strong>\u00a0directly, here we will going to install Observium as default. If you wish to install somewhere else, please modify commands and configuration accordingly. We strongly suggest you to first deploy under\u00a0\/opt<\/strong>\u00a0directory. Once you verify that everything works perfectly, you can install at your desired location.<\/p>\n
      If you have a active Observium subscription, you can use\u00a0SVN<\/strong>\u00a0repositories to download most recent version. A valid subscription account only valid for a single installation and two testing or development installations with daily security patches, new features and bug fixes.<\/p>\n
      To download most recent stable and current version of Observium, you need to have a\u00a0svn<\/strong>\u00a0package installed on the system, in order to pull the files from the SVN repository.<\/p>\n
      # yum install svn<\/pre>\n

      # svn co http:\/\/svn.observium.org\/svn\/observium\/trunk observium<\/pre>\n
      Stable Version<\/h5>\n
      # svn co http:\/\/svn.observium.org\/svn\/observium\/branches\/stable observium<\/pre>\n
      We don\u2019t have a valid subscription, So we we are going to try out Observium using the Community\/Open Source Edition. Download the latest \u2018observium-community-latest.tar.gz\u2019 stable version and unpack it as shown.<\/p>\n
      # cd \/opt\r\n# wget http:\/\/www.observium.org\/observium-community-latest.tar.gz\r\n# tar zxvf observium-community-latest.tar.gz<\/pre>\n

      Step 4: Creating Observium MySQL Database<\/h3>\n
      This is a clean installation of MySQL. So, we are going to set a new root password with the help of following command.<\/p>\n
      # service mysqld start\r\n# \/usr\/bin\/mysqladmin -u root password 'yourmysqlpassword'<\/pre>\n
      Now login into mysql shell and create the new Observium database.<\/p>\n
      # mysql -u root -p\r\n\r\nmysql> CREATE DATABASE observium;\r\nmysql> GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON observium.* TO 'observium'@'localhost' IDENTIFIED BY 'dbpassword';<\/pre>\n
      Step 5: Configure Observium<\/h3>\n
      Configuring SELinux to work with Observium is beyond the scope of this article, so we disabled SELinux. If you are familiar with SELinux rules, then you can configure it, but no guarantee that the Observium work with active SELinux. So, better disable it permanently. To do, open \u2018\/etc\/sysconfig\/selinux<\/strong>\u2018 file and change the option from \u2018permissive<\/strong>\u2018 to \u2018disabled<\/strong>\u2018.<\/p>\n
      # vi \/etc\/sysconfig\/selinux<\/pre>\n
      SELINUX=disabled<\/pre>\n
      Copy the default configuration file \u2018config.php.default<\/strong>\u2018 to \u2018config.php<\/strong>\u2018 and modify the settings as shown.<\/p>\n
      # \/opt\/observium\r\n# cp config.php.default config.php<\/pre>\n
      Now open\u00a0\u2018config.php<\/strong>\u2018 file and enter MySQL details such as database name, username and password.<\/p>\n
      # vi config.php<\/pre>\n
      \/\/ Database config\r\n$config['db_host'] = 'localhost<\/strong>';\r\n$config['db_user'] = 'observium<\/strong>';\r\n$config['db_pass'] = 'dbpassword<\/strong>';\r\n$config['db_name'] = 'observium<\/strong>';<\/pre>\n
      Then add an entry for\u00a0fping<\/strong>\u00a0binary location to\u00a0config.php<\/strong>. In RHEL distribution the location is different.<\/p>\n

      Enter MySQL Settings<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
      Next, run the following command to setup the MySQL database and insert the database default file schema.<\/p>\n
      # php includes\/update\/update.php<\/pre>\n

      Step 6: Configure Apache for Observium<\/h3>\n
      Now create a \u2018rrd<\/strong>\u2018 directory under \u2018\/opt\/observium<\/strong>\u2018 directory for storing RRD\u2019s.<\/p>\n
      # \/opt\/observium\r\n# mkdir rrd<\/pre>\n
      Next, grant Apache ownership to \u2018rrd<\/strong>\u2018 directory to write and store RRD\u2019s under this directory.<\/p>\n
      # chown apache:apache rrd<\/pre>\n
      Create a Apache Virtual Host directive for Obervium in \u2018\/etc\/httpd\/conf\/httpd.conf<\/strong>\u2018 file.<\/p>\n
      # vi \/etc\/httpd\/conf\/httpd.conf<\/pre>\n
      Add the following Virtual Host directive at the bottom of the file and enable Virtualhost section as shown in the screenshot below.<\/p>\n

      Create Observium Virtual Host<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
      To maintain observium logs, create a \u2018logs<\/strong>\u2018 directory for Apache under \u2018\/op\/observium<\/strong>\u2018 and apply Apache ownership to write logs.<\/p>\n
      # mkdir \/opt\/observium\/logs\r\n# chown apache:apache \/opt\/observium\/logs<\/pre>\n
      After all settings, restart Apache service.<\/p>\n
      # service httpd restart<\/pre>\n
      Step 7: Create Observium Admin User<\/h3>\n
      Add a first user, give level of\u00a010<\/strong>\u00a0for admin. Make sure to replace username and password with your choice.<\/p>\n
      # cd \/opt\/observium\r\n# .\/adduser.php tecmint tecmint123 10\r\n\r\nUser tecmint added successfully.<\/pre>\n
      Next add a New Device and run following commands to populate the data for new device.<\/p>\n
      # .\/add_device.php <hostname> <community> v2c\r\n# .\/discovery.php -h all\r\n# .\/poller.php -h all<\/pre>\n

      Populate Observium Data<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
      Next set a cron jobs, create a new file \u2018\/etc\/cron.d\/observium<\/strong>\u2018 and add the following contents.<\/p>\n
      33  *\/6   * * *   root    \/opt\/observium\/discovery.php -h all >> \/dev\/null 2>&1\r\n*\/5 *      * * *   root    \/opt\/observium\/discovery.php -h new >> \/dev\/null 2>&1\r\n*\/5 *      * * *   root    \/opt\/observium\/poller-wrapper.py 1 >> \/dev\/null 2>&1<\/pre>\n
      Reload cron process to take new entries.<\/p>\n
      # \/etc\/init.d\/cron reload<\/pre>\n
      The final step is to add httpd and mysqld services system-wide, to automatically start after system boot.<\/p>\n
      # chkconfig mysqld on\r\n# chkconfig httpd on<\/pre>\n
      Finally, open your favourite browser and point to\u00a0http:\/\/Your-Ip-Address<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

      Observium doesn\u2019t mean to completely remove other monitoring tools such as\u00a0Nagios<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0Cacti<\/a>, but rather to addition them with terrific understanding of certain devices. For this reason, its important to deploy Observium with Naigos or other monitoring systems to provide alerting and Cacti to produce customized graphing of your network devices.<\/p>\n
