We will be taking you to a quick note of what virtualization is, several virtualization tools before a complete guide on downloading, installing and configuring\u00a0Virtualbox<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0PhpVirtualBox<\/strong>\u00a0which is a web based virtual box front end.<\/p>\n

The download, installation and configuration of\u00a0Virtualbox<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0PhpVirtualBox<\/strong>\u00a0will follow for Debian and CentOS based Distributions.<\/p>\n

What is Virtualization<\/h4>\n

Virtualization<\/strong>\u00a0is the process of creating non-real (virtual) version of operating system, storage, network resource and hardware. Virtualization is achieved by creating virtual machines which powers an Operating System. A host physical server can host one or more virtual machine, which may power different OS (Windows, Linux, UNIX, BSD).<\/p>\n

There are several virtualization tools available. A few of them are platform specific and rest of them are available to be use on any platform.<\/p>\n

  1. Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 R2 \u2013 available for x86 and x86_64 bit platform. Support: Windows only.<\/li>\n
  2. Q \u2013 open source virtualization tool available for windows, mac and Linux.<\/li>\n
  3. Vmware \u2013 Available for Windows and Linux.<\/li>\n
  4. VirtualBox \u2013 Open source application available for Windows, Mac, Linux and Solaris.<\/li>\n
  5. Xen \u2013 Supports Windows as well as Linux distros.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    What is VirtualBox<\/h4>\n

    VirtualBox<\/strong>\u00a0initially was released under proprietary License but later (2007) Oracle Corporation started releasing it under GNU General Public License. Written completely in C, C++ and Assembly Language it is available for Windows, OS X, Linux and Solaris.<\/p>\n

    VirtualBox is claimed to be the only professional virtualization solution that is freely available and is open source. It is able to support 64 bit guest OS as well as creating Snapshot of the virtual OS.<\/p>\n

    VirtualBox lets you run virtualised application along with real desktop Application. Moreover it can be configured to share host clipboards and folders. Special drivers are available for smooth switching between systems. It is available for X86 as well as X86_64 bit platform. High on feature and performance and low on resource is a big plus point of VirtualBox.<\/p>\n

    This article will walk through the installation and configuration of VirtualBox and PhpVirtualBox to manage virtual machines under\u00a0RHEL\/CentOS\/Fedora<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Debian\/Ubuntu<\/strong>\u00a0system.<\/p>\n

    Installation of VirtualBox and PhpVirtualBox in Linux<\/h3>\n

    For this article, we will be using Minimal Installation of\u00a0Debian<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0CentOS<\/strong>\u00a0as platform of installation. All the Installation, configuration and examples are tested on\u00a0Debian 8.0<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0CentOS 7.1<\/strong>\u00a0Minimal.<\/p>\n

    1.<\/strong>\u00a0Before installing VirtualBox and PhpVirtualBox, you need to updated system package database and install prerequisites such as\u00a0Apache<\/strong>,\u00a0PHP<\/strong>\u00a0and other needed dependencies as shown below.<\/p>\n

    On Debian based Distributions<\/h4>\n
    # apt-get update && apt-get upgrade && apt-get autoremove\r\n# apt-get install apache2\r\n# apt-get install php5 php5-common php-soap php5-gd\r\n# apt-get install build-essential dkms unzip wget\r\n<\/pre>\n
    After installing all above required packages, you can proceed further to add one of the following VirtualBox PPA lines to\u00a0\/etc\/apt\/sources.list<\/code>\u00a0file, according to your Linux distribution.<\/p>\n
    deb http:\/\/download.virtualbox.org\/virtualbox\/debian raring<\/strong> contrib\r\ndeb http:\/\/download.virtualbox.org\/virtualbox\/debian quantal<\/strong> contrib\r\ndeb http:\/\/download.virtualbox.org\/virtualbox\/debian precise<\/strong> contrib\r\ndeb http:\/\/download.virtualbox.org\/virtualbox\/debian lucid<\/strong> contrib non-free\r\ndeb http:\/\/download.virtualbox.org\/virtualbox\/debian wheezy<\/strong> contrib\r\ndeb http:\/\/download.virtualbox.org\/virtualbox\/debian jessie<\/strong> contrib\r\ndeb http:\/\/download.virtualbox.org\/virtualbox\/debian squeeze<\/strong> contrib non-free\r\n<\/pre>\n
    Next download and add Oracle public key using following commands.<\/p>\n
    # wget www.virtualbox.org\/download\/oracle_vbox.asc\r\n# apt-key add oracle_vbox.asc\r\n<\/pre>\n
    On RedHat based Distributions<\/h4>\n
    # yum update && yum autoremove\r\n# yum install httpd\r\n# yum install php php-devel php-common php-soap php-gd\r\n# yum groupinstall 'Development Tools' SDL kernel-devel kernel-headers dkms wget\r\n<\/pre>\n
    After installing all above required packages, download Oracle public key and import into your system.<\/p>\n
    # wget www.virtualbox.org\/download\/oracle_vbox.asc\r\n# rpm \u2013import oracle_vbox.asc\r\n<\/pre>\n
    2.<\/strong>\u00a0Next, restart the Apache service with the help of following commands, as per your Linux distribution.<\/p>\n
    # \/etc\/init.d\/apache2 restart\t\t\t\t[On Older Debian based systems]\r\n# \/etc\/init.d\/httpd restart\t\t\t\t[On Older RedHat based systems]\r\n\r\nOR\r\n\r\n# systemctl restart apache2.service\t\t\t[On Newer Debian based systems]\r\n# systemctl restart httpd.service\t\t\t[On Newer RedHat based systems]\r\n<\/pre>\n
    Point your browser to your Private IP Address or your loopback address, you should see your apache default testing page.<\/p>\n
    http:\/\/ip-address\r\nOR\r\nhttp:\/\/localhost\r\n<\/pre>\n
    3.<\/strong>\u00a0Now it\u2019s time to install VirtualBox.<\/p>\n
    # apt-get install virtualbox-4.3\t\t[On Debian based systems]\r\n# yum install virtualbox-4.3   \t\t\t[On RedHat based systems]\r\n<\/pre>\n
    4.<\/strong>\u00a0Next download and install PhpVirtualBox.<\/p>\n
    # wget http:\/\/sourceforge.net\/projects\/phpvirtualbox\/files\/phpvirtualbox-4.3-1.zip\r\n# unzip phpvirtualbox-4.3-1.zip\r\n<\/pre>\n
    5.<\/strong>\u00a0Next, move the extracted \u2018phpvirtualbox-4.3-1<\/strong>\u2018 folder to the default root folder of the http web server (\/var\/www\/<\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0\/var\/www\/html<\/strong>).<\/p>\n
    # mv phpvirtualbox-4.3-1 \/var\/www\/html\r\n<\/pre>\n
    6.<\/strong>\u00a0Rename the directory \u2018phpvirtualbox-4.3-1<\/strong>\u2018 to\u00a0phpvb<\/strong>\u00a0or anything, so that it is easy to point to them. Next there is a configuration file\u00a0config.php-example<\/strong>\u00a0under \u2018phpvb<\/strong>\u2018 directory, rename it to\u00a0config.php<\/strong>\u00a0as shown below.<\/p>\n
    # mv \/var\/www\/html\/phpvb\/config.php-example \/var\/www\/html\/phpvb\/config.php\r\n<\/pre>\n
    7.<\/strong>\u00a0Create a new user account (or add an existing user) and add it to\u00a0vboxusers<\/strong>\u00a0group and change\u00a0phpvb<\/strong>directory ownership to\u00a0avi<\/strong>\u00a0user.<\/p>\n
    # useradd avi\r\n# passwd avi\r\n# usermod -aG vboxusers avi\r\n# chown -R avi:avi \/var\/www\/html\/phpvb\r\n<\/pre>\n
    8.<\/strong>\u00a0Now open \u2018config.php<\/strong>\u2018 file and add newly created user and password.<\/p>\n
    # vi \/ var\/www\/html\/phpvb\/config.php\r\n<\/pre>\n
    \/* Username \/ Password for system user that runs VirtualBox *\/\r\nvar $username = 'avi';\r\nvar $password = 'avi123';\r\n<\/pre>\n
    9.<\/strong>\u00a0Now Download and install\u00a0virtualbox<\/strong>\u00a0extension.<\/p>\n
    # wget http:\/\/download.virtualbox.org\/virtualbox\/4.3.12\/Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack-4.3.12-93733.vbox-extpack\r\n# VboxManage extpack install Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack-4.3.12-93733.vbox-extpack\r\n<\/pre>\n
    10.<\/strong>\u00a0Now start\u00a0Virtualbox-websrv<\/strong>\u00a0as the user \u2018avi<\/strong>\u2018 defined in config file.<\/p>\n
    $ vboxwebsrv -H 127.0.0.1\r\n<\/pre>\n
    11.<\/strong>\u00a0Now point your browser to\u00a0ip_where_phpvirtualbox_is_installed\/phpvb<\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0127.0.0.1\/phpvb<\/strong>, if it was installed on the native server.<\/p>\n
    The default username is admin<\/strong>\r\nThe default pasword is admin<\/strong>\r\n<\/pre>\n

    If you get error similar to the below image. You might have to start certain services.<\/p>\n

    Now again try login and you will see the below interface.<\/p>\n

    You may install any OS in Virtual box. Click on\u00a0New<\/strong>, give name and select architecture and version.<\/p>\n

    Give the amount of RAM virtual OS may use.<\/p>\n

    Add new virtual hard drive to new virtual machine.<\/p>\n

    Select type of Hard Drive.<\/p>\n

    Choose size of Hard Drive and click create.<\/p>\n

    You may see your Virtual disk is created and ready to host virtual OS.<\/p>\n

    Click on\u00a0storage<\/strong>\u00a0and add\u00a0virtual Image<\/strong>\u00a0(iso), or select your machine physical CD Drive. Finally click start to start installing.<\/p>\n

    Click on\u00a0Network<\/strong>\u00a0and select correct network\u00a0Adapter<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    Click on\u00a0console<\/strong>\u00a0on the top right corner select\u00a0desktop size<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0connect<\/strong>. If the console option is not highlighted you may have to enable it under\u00a0Settings<\/strong>\u00a0\u2192\u00a0Display<\/strong>\u00a0\u2192\u00a0Remote Display<\/strong>\u00a0\u2192\u00a0Enable Server<\/strong>\u00a0and Click\u00a0OK<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
