This article explains you on how to access or mount\u00a0Windows XP<\/strong>,\u00a0Vista NTFS<\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0USB<\/strong>\u00a0filesystem using the \u2018mount<\/strong>\u2018 command in\u00a0RHEL<\/strong>\/CentOS<\/strong>\/Fedora<\/strong>\u00a0systems.<\/p>\n

How to Mount Windows NTFS Partition in Linux<\/h3>\n

First you need to enable\u00a0EPEL<\/strong>\u00a0(Extra Packages for Enterprise Linux<\/strong>) Repository. You may refer the article on how to\u00a0enable EPEL Repository<\/a>\u00a0under\u00a0RHEL<\/strong>,\u00a0CentOS<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Fedora<\/strong>\u00a0systems.<\/p>\n

To mount any\u00a0NTFS<\/strong>\u00a0based filesystem, you need to install a tool called\u00a0NTFS3G<\/strong>. Before heading up for installation let\u2019s understand\u00a0NTGS3G<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

What is NTFS3G<\/h5>\n

NTFS3G<\/strong>\u00a0is an open source cross-platform, stable,\u00a0GPL<\/strong>\u00a0licensed,\u00a0POSIX<\/strong>,\u00a0NTFS<\/strong>\u00a0R\/W<\/strong>\u00a0driver used in\u00a0Linux<\/strong>. It provides safe handling of\u00a0Windows NTFS<\/strong>\u00a0file systems viz create, remove, rename, move files, directories, hard links, etc.<\/p>\n

Once\u00a0EPEL<\/strong>\u00a0is installed and enabled, let\u2019s install\u00a0ntfs-3g<\/strong>\u00a0package using the below command with root user.<\/p>\n

# yum -y install ntfs-3g<\/pre>\n
Fuse Install<\/h5>\n
Next, install and load\u00a0FUSE<\/strong>\u00a0driver to mount detected devices with below command. FUSE module is included in the kernel itself in version 2.6.18-164 or newer.<\/p>\n
# yum install fuse\r\n# modprobe fuse<\/pre>\n
Identify NTFS Partition<\/h5>\n
Once fuse module is loaded, type below command to find out\u00a0NTFS Partitions<\/strong>\u00a0in\u00a0Linux<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
# fdisk -l<\/pre>\n
 Device Boot      Start    End      Blocks   Id  System\r\n\/dev\/sdb1         1\t   21270    7816688   b  W95 FAT32<\/pre>\n
Mount NTFS partition<\/h5>\n
First create a mount point to mount the\u00a0NTFS<\/strong>\u00a0partition.<\/p>\n
# mkdir \/mnt\/nts<\/pre>\n
Simply run the following command to mount the partition. Replace\u00a0sda1<\/strong>\u00a0with your actual partition found.<\/p>\n
# mount -t ntfs-3g \/dev\/sda1 \/mnt\/nts<\/pre>\n
Once it\u2019s mounted on\u00a0\/mnt\/ntfs<\/strong>, you may use regular Linux\u00a0ls -l<\/a>\u00a0command to list the content of mounted filesystem.<\/p>\n
[root@tecmint ntfs]# ls -l\r\ntotal 27328\r\ndrwx------.  2 root root    16384 Sep  2 19:37 Cert\r\ndrwx------. 20 root root    16384 Aug 24  2011 club_application\r\ndrwx------.  6 root root    16384 Aug 11 15:37 docs\r\ndrwx------.  7 root root    16384 Jul 31  2012 Downloads\r\ndrwx------.  2 root root    16384 Dec 10 20:28 images\r\n-rwxr-xr-x.  1 root root    31744 Jan 18 00:29 Material List.doc<\/pre>\n
If you want to make mount point permanent at the boot time, then simple add the following line at the end of\u00a0\/etc\/fstab<\/strong>\u00a0file. This will remain as permanent.<\/p>\n
\/dev\/sda1    \/mnt\/usb    ntfs-3g        defaults    0    0<\/pre>\n
Umount NTFS Partition<\/h5>\n
Simply, use the following command to unmount the mounted partition.<\/p>\n
# umount \/mnt\/usb<\/pre>\n
