This tutorial will guide you on how to perform a minimal installation of latest version of\u00a0CentOS 7.0<\/strong>, using the binary\u00a0DVD ISO<\/strong>\u00a0image, an installation that is best suitable for developing a future customizable server platform, with no Graphical User Interface, where you can install only the software that you need.<\/p>\n

      1.<\/strong>\u00a0After downloading the last version of CentOS using above links or using official\u00a0CentOS download<\/a>\u00a0page. Burn it to a DVD or create a bootable USB stick using\u00a0LiveUSB Creator<\/strong>\u00a0called\u00a0Unetbootin<\/a>.<\/p>\n

      2.<\/strong>\u00a0After you have created the installer bootable media, place your DVD\/USB into your system appropriate drive, start the computer, select your bootable unit and the first CentOS 7 prompt should appear. At the prompt choose\u00a0Install CentOS 7<\/b>\u00a0and press [Enter<\/b>] key.<\/p>\n

      3.<\/strong>\u00a0The system will start loading media installer and a Welcome screen should appear. Select your\u00a0Installation Process Language<\/b>, that will assist you through the entire installation procedure and click on\u00a0Continue<\/b>.<\/p>\n

      4.<\/strong>\u00a0The next step, present screen prompt is\u00a0Installation Summary<\/b>. It contains a lot of options to fully customize your system. First thing you may want to setup is your time settings. Click on\u00a0Date & Time<\/b>\u00a0and select your server physical location from the provided map and hit on upper\u00a0Done\u00a0<\/b>button to apply configuration.<\/p>\n

      5.<\/strong>\u00a0The next step is to choose your\u00a0Language Support<\/b>\u00a0and\u00a0Keyboard<\/b>\u00a0settings. Choose your main and extra language for your system and when you\u2019re finished hit on\u00a0Done<\/b>\u00a0button.<\/p>\n

      6.<\/strong>\u00a0The same way choose your\u00a0Keyboard Layout<\/b>\u00a0by hitting the\u00a0plus<\/b>\u00a0button and test your keyboard configuration using the right input filed. After you finish setting up your keyboard, again hit on upper\u00a0Done<\/b>\u00a0button to apply changes and go back to main screen on Installation Summary.<\/p>\n

      7.<\/strong>\u00a0On the next step you can customize your installation by using other\u00a0Installation Sources<\/b>\u00a0than your local DVD\/USB media, such as a network locations using\u00a0HTTP<\/b>,\u00a0HTTPS<\/b>,\u00a0FTP<\/b>\u00a0or\u00a0NFS<\/b>\u00a0protocols and even add some additional repositories, but use this methods only if you know what you\u2019re doing. So leave the default\u00a0Auto-detected installation media<\/b>\u00a0and hit on\u00a0Done<\/b>\u00a0to continue.<\/p>\n

On this step CentOS offers a lot of Server and Desktop platform environments that you choose from, but, if you want a high degree of customization, especially if you are going to use CentOS 7 to run as a server platform, then I suggest you select\u00a0Minimal Install<\/b>with\u00a0Compatibility Libraries<\/b>\u00a0as\u00a0Add-ons<\/b>, which will install a minimal basic system software and later you can add other packages as your needs require using\u00a0yum groupinstall<\/b>\u00a0command.<\/p>\n

      10.<\/strong>\u00a0On the next screen, choose\u00a0LVM<\/b>\u00a0(Logical Volume Manager) as partition layout and, then, click on\u00a0Click here to create them automatically<\/b>, option which will create three system partition using\u00a0XFS<\/b>\u00a0filesystem, automatically redistributing your hard-disk space and gathering all LVS into one big\u00a0Volume Group<\/b>\u00a0named\u00a0centos<\/b>.<\/p>\n

        11.<\/strong>\u00a0If you are not pleased with the default partition layout done automatically by the installer you can completely\u00a0add, modify or resize<\/b>\u00a0your partition scheme and when you finish hit on\u00a0Done<\/b>\u00a0button and\u00a0Accept Changes<\/b>\u00a0on the Summary of Changes prompt.<\/p>\n

        NOTE<\/strong>: For those users, who have hard-disks more than 2TB in size, the installer automatically will convert partition table to GPT, but if you wish to use GPT table on smaller disks than 2TB, then you should use the argument\u00a0inst.gpt<\/b>\u00a0to the installer boot command line in order to change the default behaviour.<\/p>\n

        12.<\/strong>\u00a0The next step is to set your system hostname and enable networking. Click on\u00a0Network & Hostname<\/b>\u00a0label and type your system\u00a0FQDN<\/b>\u00a0(Fully Qualified Domain Name) on Hostname filed, then enable your Network interface, switching the top\u00a0Ethernet<\/b>\u00a0button to\u00a0ON<\/b>.<\/p>\n

        If you have a functional DHCP server on you network then it will automatically configure all your network setting for enabled NIC, which should appear under your active interface.<\/p>\n

        13.<\/strong>\u00a0If your system will be destined as a server it\u2019s better to set static network configuration on Ethernet NIC by clicking on\u00a0Configure<\/b>\u00a0button and add all your static interface settings like in the screenshot below, and when you\u2019re finished hit on\u00a0Save<\/b>\u00a0button, disable and enable Ethernet card by switching the button to\u00a0OFF<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0ON<\/strong>, and, then hit on\u00a0Done<\/b>\u00a0to apply setting and go back to main menu.<\/p>\n

        14.<\/strong>\u00a0Now it\u2019s time to start installation process by pressing on\u00a0Begin Installation<\/b>\u00a0button and set up a strong password for\u00a0root\u00a0<\/b>account.<\/p>\n

        15.<\/strong>\u00a0After you finish setting up a strong password for root account move to\u00a0User Creation<\/b>\u00a0and create your first system user. You can designate this user to become a System Admin with root privileges using\u00a0sudo<\/b>\u00a0command by checking the box\u00a0Make this user administrator<\/b>, then click on\u00a0Done<\/b>\u00a0to go back on main menu and wait for the installation process to finish.<\/p>\n
