Red Hat<\/b>,\u00a0Inc<\/b>. the largest company in Open Source world, released last month one of their major enterprise products \u2013\u00a0RHEL 7.0<\/b>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0Red Hat Enterprise Linux<\/b>, designed for modern datacenters, new cloud platforms and big data.<\/p>\n

Among other important improvement like switching to\u00a0systemd<\/b>, who now manages daemons, processes and other important system resources even for\u00a0init<\/b>\u00a0services that are now passed through systemd start-up, use of\u00a0Linux Containers<\/b>\u00a0with\u00a0Docker<\/b>,\u00a0cross-realm trust<\/b>\u00a0for Microsoft Active Directory, one important aspect represents the\u00a0XFS as the default filesystem<\/b>, which can support filesystems up to 16 exabytes and files up to 8 exabytes.<\/p>\n

You must have an active Red Hat subscription to download\u00a0RHEL 7.0 ISO<\/strong>\u00a0image from\u00a0Red Hat Customer Portal<\/a>.<\/p>\n

    Although RHEL can be installed on a variety of platforms, such as AMD 64, Intel 64, IBM System Z, IBM Power, etc. This tutorial covers the\u00a0RHEL 7.0<\/b>\u00a0basic minimal installation with on an Intel\u00a0x86-64<\/b>\u00a0processor architecture using a binary\u00a0DVD ISO<\/b>\u00a0image, an installation best suited for developing a high customizable server platform with no Graphical Interface.<\/p>\n

    Installation of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.0<\/h3>\n

    1.<\/strong>\u00a0After registering on\u00a0Red Hat Customer Portal<\/b>\u00a0go to Download section and grab the last version of\u00a0RHEL DVD Binary ISO<\/b>\u00a0image, then burn it to a DVD media or create a USB bootable media using\u00a0Unetbootin LiveUSB Creator<\/a>.<\/p>\n

    2.<\/strong>\u00a0Then place the DVD\/USB in your appropriate system drive, start your computer, select bootable unit and on the first RHEL prompt select\u00a0Install Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.0<\/b>.<\/p>\n

    4.<\/strong>\u00a0When the installer gets on\u00a0Installation Summary<\/b>\u00a0it\u2019s time to customize the installation process. First click on\u00a0Date & Time<\/b>, choose your system location from the provided map and hit on\u00a0Done<\/b>\u00a0to apply configuration.<\/p>\n

    5.<\/strong>\u00a0The next step is to change\u00a0Language System Support<\/b>\u00a0and\u00a0Keyboard<\/b>\u00a0language. Click on both if you want to change or add other languages to your system but for a server the recommendation is to stick with English language.<\/p>\n

    6.<\/strong>\u00a0If you want to use other sources than the ones provided by the DVD media hit on\u00a0Installation Source<\/b>\u00a0and add your\u00a0Additional Repositories<\/b>\u00a0or specify a network location using\u00a0HTTP<\/b>,\u00a0HTTPS<\/b>,\u00a0FTP<\/b>\u00a0or\u00a0NFS<\/b>\u00a0protocols then hit on\u00a0Done<\/b>\u00a0to use your new sources. If you can\u2019t provide other sources stick to default one\u00a0Auto-detected installation media<\/b>.<\/p>\n

    7.<\/strong>\u00a0The next important step is to select your system software. Click on\u00a0Software Selection<\/b>\u00a0and choose your Base Installation Environment from the down-list. For a highly customizable platform where you can install only the packages that you need after the installation, choose\u00a0Minimal Install<\/b>\u00a0with\u00a0Compatibility Libraries Add-ons<\/b>, then hit on\u00a0Done<\/b>\u00a0to apply this changes to installation process.<\/p>\n

    8.<\/strong>\u00a0The next important step is to configure your system partitions. Click on\u00a0Installation Destination<\/b>, select\u00a0LVM<\/b>as partition scheme for a
    \nbetter management over system space, then hit on\u00a0Click here to create them automatically<\/b>.<\/p>\n

    9.<\/strong>\u00a0After the installer presents you with default system partition scheme you can edit in any way that suits you (delete and recreate partitions and mount points, change partitions space capacity and file system type, etc.). As the base scheme for a server you should use dedicated partitions such as:<\/p>\n

    1. \/boot \u2013 500 MB \u2013 non-LVM<\/li>\n
    2. \/root \u2013 min 20 GB \u2013 LVM<\/li>\n
    3. \/home \u2013 LVM<\/li>\n
    4. \/var \u2013 min 20 GB \u2013 LVM<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      With\u00a0XFS<\/b>\u00a0filesystem, which is the most advanced filesystem in the world. After editing partitions hit on\u00a0Update Setting<\/b>\u00a0button, then click on\u00a0Done<\/b>\u00a0then\u00a0Accept Changes<\/b>\u00a0on\u00a0Summary of Changes<\/b>\u00a0prompt to apply new configurations.<\/p>\n

      As a note, if your Hard-Disk is larger than 2TB in size the installer automatically will convert partition table to\u00a0GPT<\/b>\u00a0disks and if you want to use GPT table on disks smaller than 2TB, then you should pass the argument\u00a0inst.gpt<\/b>\u00a0to the boot command line in order to change the default behaviour.<\/p>\n

      10.<\/strong>\u00a0The last step before continuing with installation process is setting your Network Connection. Click on\u00a0Network & Hostname<\/b>\u00a0and setup your system hostname. Here you can use your short system hostname or you can append the dot domain (FQDN).<\/p>\n

      11.<\/strong>\u00a0After setting up hostname bring up your Network Interface by switching the top\u00a0Ethernet<\/b>\u00a0button to\u00a0ON<\/b>. If your network provides automatic Interface configurations through a DHCP server your IPs should be visible on Ethernet Interface Card else go to\u00a0Configure<\/b>\u00a0button and provide your static network settings for your appropriate network connection.<\/p>\n

      12.<\/strong>\u00a0After finishing editing Ethernet Interface settings hit on\u00a0Done<\/b>\u00a0which you bring you to default window installer and after you check on your installation settings hit on\u00a0Begin Installation<\/b>\u00a0to proceed further with system installation.<\/p>\n

      13.<\/strong>\u00a0As the installation begins writing the system components on your hard-disk, you need to supply your\u00a0Root Password<\/b>\u00a0and create a new User. Click on\u00a0Root Password<\/b>\u00a0and try choose a strong with one at least eight characters in length (alpha-numerical and special characters) and hit in\u00a0Done<\/b>\u00a0when you finish.<\/p>\n

A good idea is to use this user as a system administrator with root powers through\u00a0sudo<\/b>\u00a0command by checking the box\u00a0Make this user administrator<\/b>, then click on\u00a0Done<\/b>\u00a0and wait for the installation process to finish.<\/p>\n

      15.<\/strong>\u00a0After the installation finishes the installer will announce that everything completed with success so you should be ready to use your system after reboot.<\/p>\n

      Congratulation! Remove you installation media and reboot your computer and you can now login to your new minimal Red Hat Linux 7.0 environment and perform other system tasks for beginning like\u00a0register<\/b>\u00a0you system to a\u00a0Red Hat Subscription<\/b>, activate your system\u00a0Repositories<\/b>,\u00a0update<\/b>\u00a0you system and install other useful tools needed to run day to day tasks.<\/p>\n
