This tutorial describes the installation process of the latest release of\u00a0Ubuntu Desktop 18.04<\/strong>, codename\u00a0Bionic Beaver<\/strong>, on a dedicated machine or a virtual machine alongside a pre-installed\u00a0Windows 10<\/strong>\u00a0Operating System. The installation process can be done via the\u00a0Ubuntu Desktop DVD ISO<\/strong>\u00a0image or via a bootable\u00a0Ubuntu USB<\/strong>drive.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Ubuntu Bionic OS<\/strong>\u00a0will be installed on a\u00a0UEFI<\/strong>\u00a0motherboard with\u00a0Legacy Mode<\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0CSM<\/strong>\u00a0(Compatibility Support Module<\/strong>) option disabled.<\/p>\n

Requirements<\/h4>\n
    \n
  1. Download Ubuntu Desktop 18.04 ISO<\/a>\u00a0image for x86_64bit architecture.<\/li>\n
  2. A direct or a proxy internet connection.<\/li>\n
  3. Rufus utility<\/a>\u00a0in order to create an Ubuntu Desktop bootable USB drive compatible with UEFI motherboards.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Create Free Space on Windows for Ubuntu Install<\/h3>\n

    On a pre-installed machine with a single\u00a0Windows 10<\/strong>\u00a0partition, you need to create some free space in\u00a0Windows<\/strong>partition in order to install\u00a0Ubuntu 18.04<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    First login to the system using an account with administrator privileges, open a\u00a0Command Prompt<\/strong>\u00a0window with admin rights and execute\u00a0diskmgmt.msc<\/code>\u00a0command to open\u00a0Disk Management<\/strong>\u00a0utility.<\/p>\n

    Select the\u00a0Windows<\/strong>\u00a0partition, usually\u00a0C:<\/code>\u00a0volume, right click on this partition and select\u00a0Shrink Volume<\/strong>\u00a0option in order to reduce the partition size.<\/p>\n

    Wait for the system to collect partition size data, add the desired amount of space you want to shrink and hit in\u00a0Shrink<\/strong>\u00a0button. After the shrink process completes, a new unallocated space will be present in your drive. We\u2019ll use this free space to install Ubuntu alongside Windows 10.<\/p>\n

    Install Ubuntu 18.4 Alongside with Windows<\/h3>\n
    On the next step, place\u00a0Ubuntu Desktop DVD ISO<\/strong>\u00a0image or the bootable USB stick into the appropriate motherboard drive and,\u00a0reboot<\/strong>\u00a0the machine and hit the appropriate bootable key ((usually\u00a0F12<\/code>,\u00a0F10<\/code>\u00a0or\u00a0F2<\/code>) in order to boot the Ubuntu installer DVD or USB bootable image.<\/p>\n
    On the first installation screen select\u00a0Install Ubuntu<\/strong>\u00a0and hit\u00a0Enter<\/strong>\u00a0key to start the installation process.<\/p>\n

    In the \u201dWelcome<\/strong>\u201d screen, select your installation language and hit on\u00a0Continue<\/strong>\u00a0button.<\/p>\n

    On the next screen, select the keyboard layout for your system and hit on\u00a0Continue<\/strong>\u00a0button.<\/p>\n

    In the next installation screen, choose\u00a0Normal<\/code>\u00a0installation and hit on\u00a0Continue<\/strong>\u00a0button. In this screen you also have the option to perform a\u00a0Minimal<\/code>\u00a0installation of Ubuntu Desktop, which includes only some basic system utilities and a web browser.<\/p>\n
    You can also turn off\u00a0Secure Boot<\/strong>\u00a0option, if this option is enabled in motherboard\u00a0UEFI<\/strong>\u00a0settings in order to install third-party software for graphic card, Wi-Fi or additional media formats. Be aware that turning off Secure Boot option requires a password.<\/p>\n

    Next, In Installation type menu, choose Something else option in order to manually partition the hard disk and hit on\u00a0Continue<\/strong>\u00a0button.<\/p>\n

    In hard disk partition table menu, select the hard drive\u00a0free space<\/strong>\u00a0and hit on\u00a0+<\/code>\u00a0button in order to create the Ubuntu partition.<\/p>\n

    In the partition pop-up window, add the size of the partition in MB, choose the partition type as\u00a0Primary<\/strong>\u00a0and the partition location at the Beginning of this space.<\/p>\n
