The previous tutorial concerning SHOUTcast server, just covered the basic server setup on\u00a0CentOS 7<\/b>\u00a0Linux distribution, without any live media streaming.<\/p>\n

This guide is not addressed for advanced Linux users and will guide you through the process of how you can use one of the most popular music player on Windows platforms,\u00a0Winamp<\/b>, to broadcast audio media online from remote points with the help of\u00a0SHOUTcast DSP plugin<\/b>\u00a0and, also, how you can use the\u00a0Mixxx<\/b>\u00a0DJ console, the most advanced music mixing DJing program in Linux, to put your mixed music on-air over Internet.<\/p>\n

Requirements:<\/h4>\n
    \n
  1. Install SHOUTCast Radio Server on Linux<\/a><\/li>\n
  2. Install Linux Mint 17 (Qiana)<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    While\u00a0Mixxx<\/b>\u00a0is available on all major Linux distributions, this guide will only cover Mixxx installation and configuration on\u00a0Linux Mint 17<\/b>, which is the best-suited platform for beginners who only need a free open source platform, with just few simple clicks or commands distance to install and configure all the pre-build debian packages for Mixxx player to stream their mixes over Internet.<\/p>\n

    Important<\/strong>: As I said, the following instructions are practically tested on\u00a0Linux Mint 17<\/strong>, but the same instructions can also works on all other major Linux distributions, the only difference is Mixxx installation part, that too you can get it by doing yum or apt.<\/p>\n

    Step 1: Install and Configure Mixxx to Stream Audio Files to SHOUTcast Server<\/h3>\n

    1.<\/strong>\u00a0If you\u2019re not an advanced Linux user and the command line sounds scary, you can install\u00a0Mixxx<\/b>\u00a0program from a Graphical User Interface, by opening Linux Mint\u00a0Software Manager<\/b>.<\/p>\n

    Click on Linux Mint\u00a0Menu<\/b>, go to\u00a0Software Manager<\/b>, search for\u00a0Mixxx<\/b>\u00a0software and install it on your system, as presented in the screenshots below.<\/p>\n

    2.<\/strong>\u00a0As an alternative to minimize time, you can use the command line to install Mixxx. Open an\u00a0Terminal<\/b>\u00a0and type the following command to install Mixxx software.<\/p>\n

    $ sudo apt-get install mixxx\r\n<\/pre>\n

    3.<\/strong>\u00a0After Mixxx is installed on your system, you need to configure in order to be able to live broadcast audio to\u00a0SHOUTcast<\/b>\u00a0server. Open Mixxx and add a
    \nfolder that contains audio samples in order to test configuration. Load your music samples to Mixxx consoles, then go to\u00a0Options<\/b>\u00a0menu ->\u00a0Preferences<\/b>.<\/p>\n

    4.<\/strong>\u00a0On\u00a0Preferences<\/b>\u00a0menu navigate to bottom on\u00a0Live Broadcasting<\/b>\u00a0and use the following settings (check the screenshot below as an example).<\/p>\n

    1. Check\u00a0Enable live broadcasting<\/b>\u00a0box.<\/li>\n
    2. Choose\u00a0Shoutcast<\/b>\u00a0Server connection<\/li>\n
    3. Enter your SHOUTcast server\u00a0IP Address<\/b>\u00a0or DNS name on\u00a0Host<\/b>\u00a0filed.<\/li>\n
    4. Enter your SHOUTcast server\u00a0Port<\/b>\u00a0number (by default is\u00a08000<\/b>\u00a0if not changed ).<\/li>\n
    5. Enter\u00a0admin<\/b>\u00a0on\u00a0Login<\/b>\u00a0fileld (default user for SHOUTcast server).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      1. On\u00a0Password<\/b>\u00a0filed Enter your\u00a0streampassword_1<\/b>\u00a0configured in SHOUTcast server (sc_server.conf<\/b>\u00a0file ).<\/li>\n
      2. Check\u00a0Public stream<\/b>\u00a0box and enter your radio station information.<\/li>\n
      3. If you steam\u00a0MP3<\/b>\u00a0choose this format on Encoding.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        5.<\/strong>\u00a0After you finish hit on\u00a0OK<\/b>\u00a0button to apply settings and a new pop-up should appear if the connection to SHOTcast server was successfully established.<\/p>\n

        That\u2019s all! Hit the\u00a0Play<\/b>\u00a0button from\u00a0Mixxx<\/b>\u00a0console and your audio should be now transmitted to the server which it will broadcast live on your networks or Internet.<\/p>\n
        6.<\/strong>\u00a0If you want to test the server functionality, open a browser and type your SHOUTcast server\u00a0IP Address<\/b>\u00a0or domain name with its port number on URL\u00a0http:\/\/192.168.1.80:8000<\/b>\u00a0and the live stream should be available for download by clicking on\u00a0Listen<\/b>.<\/p>\n

        7.<\/strong>\u00a0After the server\u2019s stream playlist file was downloaded, use your favourite music player to open it and listen you radio station songs (in my case I use\u00a0Audacious<\/b>\u00a0player on Linux and even on Windows to listen to Internet radio stations).<\/p>\n

        Also, try not to listen the radio station from the same host that you are streaming to server, but use a different computer to enter to SHOUTcast Steam webpage and download the playlist file.<\/p>\n
        Step 2: Configure Winamp on Windows to Stream Audio to SHOUTcast Server<\/h3>\n
        8.<\/strong>\u00a0Winamp can be transformed into a powerful media streaming player with the help of\u00a0SHOUTcast DSP Plug-in<\/b>. First go to\u00a0Nullsoft<\/a>\u00a0download page and grab the last version of\u00a0SHOUTcast DSP<\/b>.<\/p>\n

        9.<\/strong>\u00a0After you install this plugin, open\u00a0Winamp<\/b>\u00a0player and move to\u00a0Options<\/b>\u00a0->\u00a0Preferences<\/b>. On\u00a0Preferences<\/b>\u00a0menu navigate to\u00a0Plug-ins<\/b>, select on\u00a0DSP\/Effect<\/b>, choose\u00a0SHOUTcast Source DSP<\/b>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/b>hit on\u00a0Configure active plug-in<\/b>.<\/p>\n

        10.<\/strong>\u00a0A new window named\u00a0SHOUTcast Source<\/b>\u00a0should appear. Now it\u2019s time to configure Winamp to broadcast audio media to SHOUTcast server on Linux. On the upper tabs click on\u00a0Output<\/b>\u00a0and choose\u00a0Output 1<\/b>. Then move to bottom tabs, hit on\u00a0Login<\/b>\u00a0menu and enter your\u00a0SHOUTcast server IP Address<\/b>\u00a0or domain name,\u00a0Port<\/b>\u00a0number.<\/p>\n
        Choose\u00a01<\/b>\u00a0for\u00a0Stream ID<\/b>\u00a0and enter\u00a0admin<\/b>\u00a0user for\u00a0DJ\/User ID<\/b>\u00a0followed by\u00a0streampassword_1<\/b>\u00a0configured on server (sc_serv.conf<\/b>\u00a0file) and\u00a0Connect using Automatic mode<\/b>.<\/p>\n

        11.<\/strong>\u00a0Next, move to second bottom tab named\u00a0Directory<\/b>, check\u00a0Make this stream public<\/b>\u00a0box, enter a\u00a0Name<\/b>\u00a0for your radio station and a public\u00a0URL<\/b>\u00a0address.<\/p>\n
        If you already have a website page for visitors (you can also put your SHOUTcast server IP address and Port on URL filed). \u2013 Optional step.<\/p>\n

        12.<\/strong>\u00a0To configure the last setting, hit the\u00a0Encoder<\/b>\u00a0tab, choose your favourite media\u00a0Encoder Type<\/b>\u00a0(usually MP3), leave the default values for\u00a0Encoder Settings<\/b>\u00a0and hit on\u00a0Connect<\/b>\u00a0button.<\/p>\n
        If you want the\u00a0DSP Plug-in<\/b>\u00a0to automatically start and connect to SHOUTcast server after you start Winamp player, also check\u00a0Auto Connect<\/b>\u00a0box.<\/p>\n

        13.<\/strong>\u00a0If the settings are correct, you will get a message on\u00a0Status<\/b>\u00a0displaying the quantity of data sent to SHOUTcast server. Open a\u00a0Putty<\/b>\u00a0and connect to remote SSH terminal connection to SHOUTcast server you should see some detailed information about the connection status.<\/p>\n

        14.<\/strong>\u00a0You can also check your radio stream status and information by visiting SHOUTcast server IP Address on port 8000 from a different computer and download the server media playlist in order to listen music with your favourite audio player.<\/p>\n

Your radio station\u00a0Name<\/b>\u00a0with its attached URL will be automatically hashed and displayed on\u00a0http:\/\/www.shoutcast.com<\/a>official page. which you can visit by clicking on\u00a0Steam Name<\/b>\u00a0from SHOUTcast server web interface.<\/p>\n

        Step 3: Perform SHOUTcast Administrative Tasks<\/h3>\n
        16.<\/strong>\u00a0To manage your radio station stream go to SHOUTcast web interface at\u00a0http:\/\/server_IP:8000<\/b>, click on\u00a0Admin Login<\/b>\u00a0hyperlink, enter your server stream credentials configured on\u00a0sc_serv.conf<\/b>\u00a0file from Linux and you will be able to perform administrative tasks, such as viewing your Listeners, display Song History, Ban clients and more.<\/p>\n
