To be more clear, cloud storage means\u00a0<strong>sharing data over network<\/strong>, rather than having local servers or personal device.<\/p>\n<p>Cloud storage is all around us in our smart phones, on desktops and servers etc. The\u00a0<strong>Dropbox<\/strong>\u00a0application which is now available on smart phone is nothing but cloud storage application.\u00a0<strong>Google Drive<\/strong>\u00a0is another cloud storage application which lets you store and access your stored data from anywhere and anytime.<\/p>\n<p>This article aims at \u2013 Building your personal cloud storage using\u00a0<strong>ownCloud<\/strong>\u00a0application. But what is the need of building personal cloud when there are third party hosting. Well all the third party hosting limits you to work with the given configuration and storage limit. With the ever expanding list of\u00a0<strong>photos<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>videos<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>mp3\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0of storage is not sufficient, moreover cloud storage is a relatively new concept and there are not many third party cloud storage host and the available one is too much costly.<\/p>\n<p>ownCloud community has recently released their special release\u00a0<strong>ownCloud 9<\/strong>. They have come up with incredible changes in terms of\u00a0<strong>quality<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>performance<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>innovations<\/strong>\u00a0to provide excellent cloud experience with \u201c<strong>ownCloud<\/strong>\u201c. If you are already working with its older version, you\u2019ll definitely experience significant improvements in Document handling.<\/p>\n<h3>What is ownCloud<\/h3>\n<p><strong>ownCloud<\/strong>\u00a0is a free, open-source and powerful web application for data synchronization, file sharing, and remote storage of files. ownCloud is written in\u00a0<strong>PHP<\/strong>\/<strong>JavaScript<\/strong>\u00a0languages. It is designed to work with several database management systems, including\u00a0<strong>MySQL<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>MariaDB<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>SQLite<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Oracle Database<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>PostgreSQL<\/strong>. Moreover owncloud can be deployed on all known platforms viz.,\u00a0<strong>Linux<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Macintosh<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Windows<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Android<\/strong>. This feature makes it possible to collaborate organizations with the control at local owncloud deployment server.<\/li>\n<li>Apps now features rating and are category based.<\/li>\n<li>Set favorite icon to files and folder so that it is easy to sort and edit.<\/li>\n<li>Add files to favorites so that it is easy to find them later.<\/li>\n<li>Admin can edit email address of users, sort and select user as well as rename group.<\/li>\n<li>Basic feature includes \u2013 connecting to owncloud over HTTP(s), browse for files\/folder in explorer, automatic sync, sharing files with other users, sync folders from PC, Pause and resume downloads and uploads and configure proxy.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>System Requirements<\/h3>\n<p>For higher performance, stability, support, and full functionality we recommend following things:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Minimum 128MB RAM, recommend 512MB.<\/li>\n<li>RHEL\/CentOS 7\/6, Fedora 18-23, Ubuntu 16.04-12.04, Debian 8\/7, etc.<\/li>\n<li>MySQL\/MariaDB<\/li>\n<li>PHP 5.4 +<\/li>\n<li>Apache 2.4 with mod_php<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>Step 1: Install ownCloud Storage in Linux<\/h3>\n<p>In order to setup your own personal cloud storage (<strong>ownCloud<\/strong>), you must have\u00a0<strong>LAMP<\/strong>\u00a0(<strong>Linux<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Apache<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>MySQL\/MariaDB<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>PHP<\/strong>) stack installed. Other than LAMP stack you might need\u00a0<strong>Perl<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Python<\/strong>\u00a0based upon your use.<\/p>\n<h5>On Debian\/Ubuntu\/Linux Mint<\/h5>\n<pre>---------------------- <strong>For MySQL Server<\/strong> ----------------------\r\n# apt-get install apache2 apache2-doc apache2-utils mysql-server mysql-client php5 php5-mysql php5-curl\r\n\r\n---------------------- <strong>For MariaDB Server<\/strong> ----------------------\r\n# apt-get install apache2 apache2-doc apache2-utils mariadb-server php5 php5-mysql php5-curl\r\n<\/pre>\n<h5>On RedHat\/CentOS\/Fedora<\/h5>\n<pre>---------------------- <strong>For MySQL Server<\/strong> ----------------------\r\n# yum install httpd mysql-server mysql-client php php-mysql php-curl\r\n\r\n---------------------- <strong>For MariaDB Server<\/strong> ----------------------\r\n# yum install httpd mariadb-server php php-mysql php-curl\r\n<\/pre>\n<h3>Step 2: Create Cloud Database<\/h3>\n<p>Once you setup\u00a0<strong>LAMP<\/strong>\u00a0stack on your personal box, just login to your database (<strong>MySQL<\/strong>, here).<\/p>\n<pre># mysql -u root -p<\/pre>\n<p>Enter mysql\u00a0<strong>root<\/strong>\u00a0password. Now we will be creating a database (say\u00a0<strong>cloud<\/strong>).<\/p>\n<pre>mysql&gt; create database cloud ; \r\nQuery OK, 1 row affected (0.00 sec)<\/pre>\n<p>It is not a good idea to access your database from\u00a0<strong>root<\/strong>, hence grant all the permission to a normal user (say\u00a0<strong>tecmint<\/strong>).<\/p>\n<pre>mysql&gt; grant all on cloud.* to tecmint@localhost identified by 'my_password'; \r\nQuery OK, 0 rows affected (0.00 sec)<\/pre>\n<h3>Step 3: Download and Install ownCloud Application<\/h3>\n<p>Now its time to Download latest ownCloud (i.e version\u00a0<strong>8.0.0<\/strong>) application using below link.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/owncloud.org\/install\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">http:\/\/owncloud.org\/install\/<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Alternatively, you may use\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tecmint.com\/10-wget-command-examples-in-linux\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wget command<\/a>\u00a0to download the source tar-ball package.<\/p>\n<pre># wget https:\/\/download.owncloud.org\/community\/owncloud-9.0.0.tar.bz2<\/pre>\n<p>You may alternatively install from binary package using\u00a0<strong>APT<\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0<strong>YUM<\/strong>. The installation instruction can be found at:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/software.opensuse.org\/download\/package?project=isv:ownCloud:community&amp;package=owncloud\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Install ownCloud using APT or YUM<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>However we choose the\u00a0<strong>TAR<\/strong>\u00a0package which is universally accepted and works on most of the known system.<\/p>\n<p>After Downloading the owncloud package, move it to your\u00a0<strong>Apache<\/strong>\u00a0working directory, which is<strong>\u00a0\/var\/www<\/strong>\u00a0(for\u00a0<strong>Debian<\/strong>) and\u00a0<strong>\/var\/www\/html<\/strong>\u00a0(for\u00a0<strong>RedHat<\/strong>).<\/p>\n<pre># cp owncloud-9.0.0.tar.bz2 \/var\/www\/\t\t[For Debian based Systems]\r\n# cp owncloud-9.0.0.tar.bz2 \/var\/www\/html\/\t[For RedHat based Systems]<\/pre>\n<p>Next, extract the package using\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tecmint.com\/18-tar-command-examples-in-linux\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tar command<\/a>\u00a0as shown below.<\/p>\n<pre># tar -jxvf owncloud-9.0.0.tar.bz2<\/pre>\n<p>Since the\u00a0<strong>TAR<\/strong>\u00a0Archive is extracted you may remove the Archive.<\/p>\n<pre># rm -rf owncloud-9.0.0.tar.bz2<\/pre>\n<p>We might need to change the file permission of\u00a0<strong>owncloud<\/strong>, in our\u00a0<strong>Apache<\/strong>\u00a0working directory.<\/p>\n<pre># chmod -R 777 owncloud\/<\/pre>\n<p><strong>Note<\/strong>: Remember we are giving\u00a0<strong>read<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>write<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>execute<\/strong>\u00a0permission to all, which is although risky but this time needed since several configuration file would be written automatically. We later need to change permission to\u00a0<strong>755<\/strong>, once the setup is finished.<\/p>\n<h3>Step 4: Configuring Apache for ownCloud<\/h3>\n<p>For security purpose<strong>\u00a0ownCloud<\/strong>\u00a0uses\u00a0<strong>Apache<\/strong>\u2018s\u00a0<strong>.htaccess<\/strong>\u00a0files, in order to use them. We need to enable two Apache modules\u00a0<strong>mod_rewrite<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>mod_headers<\/strong>\u00a0for ownCloud to function properly. Type the following command to enable these modules under\u00a0<strong>Debian<\/strong>\u00a0based systems only, for\u00a0<strong>RedHat<\/strong>\u00a0systems they are enabled by default.<\/p>\n<pre># a2enmod rewrite\r\n# a2enmod headers<\/pre>\n<p>Additionally, we need to enable\u00a0<strong>mod_rewrite rules<\/strong>\u00a0to work properly under\u00a0<strong>Apache<\/strong>\u2018s main configuration file. Open the Apache global configuation file.<\/p>\n<pre># nano \/etc\/apache2\/sites-available\/default\t[For Debian based Systems]\r\n# vi \/etc\/httpd\/conf\/httpd.conf\t\t\t[For RedHat based Systems]<\/pre>\n<p>There, find \u201c<strong>AllowOverride None<\/strong>\u201d and change this to \u201c<strong>AllowOverride All<\/strong>\u201d as shown.<\/p>\n<pre>AllowOverride None<\/pre>\n<p>Change this to:<\/p>\n<pre>AllowOverride All<\/pre>\n<p>Now we need to restart\u00a0<strong>Apache<\/strong>\u00a0to reload new changes.<\/p>\n<pre># service apache2 restart\t\t\t[For Debian based Systems]\r\n# service httpd restart\t\t\t\t[For RedHat based Systems]<\/pre>\n<h3>Step 5: Access ownCloud Application<\/h3>\n<p>Now you can acess your very personal cloud storage at:<\/p>\n<pre>http:\/\/localhost\/owncloud\r\nOR\r\nhttp:\/\/your-ip-address\/owncloud<\/pre>\n<p>Once you get the Owncloud page, you need to create an\u00a0<strong>admin<\/strong>\u00a0account and a\u00a0<strong>Data<\/strong>\u00a0folder location, where all files\/folders will be stored (or leave default location i.e.\u00a0<strong>\/var\/www\/owncloud\/data<\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0<strong>\/var\/www\/html\/owncloud\/data<\/strong>). Next, you need to enter mysql\u00a0<strong>database username<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>password<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>database name<\/strong>, refer the screenshot below.<\/p>\n<div Become a proud owner of private cloud storage, give it a try!<\/p>\n<h3>Upgrading to Owncloud 9 from Older Versions<\/h3>\n<p>To update earlier version of your owncloud to\u00a0<strong>9<\/strong>, you need to first update the old owncloud to latest point release of the same version.<\/p>\n<p>For example, if you\u2019re using\u00a0<strong>owncloud 6.0.xy<\/strong>\u00a0(where \u2018<strong>xy<\/strong>\u2018 is the version number), you need to first update to\u00a0<strong>6.0.x<\/strong>of the same series, and then you able to upgrade to\u00a0<strong>owncloud 7<\/strong>\u00a0using the following instructions.<\/p>\n<h4>Update Owncloud 6.0.xx to 6.0.2<\/h4>\n<p>1. Making proper backup of everything is always suggested.<\/p>\n<p>2. Enable the updater plugin (if it is disabled).<\/p>\n<p>3. Go to Admin Panel and fire update.<\/p>\n<p>4.
