Cloud<\/strong>\u00a0storage stands for virtualised pool of network storage most commonly hosted by third parties. Cloud storage is a\u00a0network-based<\/strong>\u00a0service which physically do not exist but remains somewhere in the cloud. To be more clear, cloud storage means\u00a0sharing data over network<\/strong>, rather than having local servers or personal device.<\/p>\n

Cloud storage is all around us in our smart phones, on desktops and servers etc. The\u00a0Dropbox<\/strong>\u00a0application which is now available on smart phone is nothing but cloud storage application.\u00a0Google Drive<\/strong>\u00a0is another cloud storage application which lets you store and access your stored data from anywhere and anytime.<\/p>\n

This article aims at \u2013 Building your personal cloud storage using\u00a0ownCloud<\/strong>\u00a0application. But what is the need of building personal cloud when there are third party hosting. Well all the third party hosting limits you to work with the given configuration and storage limit. With the ever expanding list of\u00a0photos<\/strong>,\u00a0videos<\/strong>,\u00a0mp3\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0of storage is not sufficient, moreover cloud storage is a relatively new concept and there are not many third party cloud storage host and the available one is too much costly.<\/p>\n

ownCloud community has recently released their special release\u00a0ownCloud 9<\/strong>. They have come up with incredible changes in terms of\u00a0quality<\/strong>,\u00a0performance<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0innovations<\/strong>\u00a0to provide excellent cloud experience with \u201cownCloud<\/strong>\u201c. If you are already working with its older version, you\u2019ll definitely experience significant improvements in Document handling.<\/p>\n

What is ownCloud<\/h3>\n

ownCloud<\/strong>\u00a0is a free, open-source and powerful web application for data synchronization, file sharing, and remote storage of files. ownCloud is written in\u00a0PHP<\/strong>\/JavaScript<\/strong>\u00a0languages. It is designed to work with several database management systems, including\u00a0MySQL<\/strong>,\u00a0MariaDB<\/strong>,\u00a0SQLite<\/strong>,\u00a0Oracle Database<\/strong>, and\u00a0PostgreSQL<\/strong>. Moreover owncloud can be deployed on all known platforms viz.,\u00a0Linux<\/strong>,\u00a0Macintosh<\/strong>,\u00a0Windows<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Android<\/strong>. In short it\u2019s a robust, platform Independent, flexible in terms of configuration and usability, easy-to-use open source Application.<\/p>\n

  1. Store files, folders, contacts, photo galleries, calendar, etc on the server of your choice, Later you can access it from mobile, desktop, or web browser.<\/li>\n
  2. In the world of gadgets, a normal person have tablet, smart phone, laptop, etc. Own cloud lets you sync all your files, contacts, photo, calendar, etc synced among the devices.<\/li>\n
  3. In the era of sharing aka Facebook, Twitter, Google+, etc, owncloud lets you share your data with others and share them publicly or privately as per your needs.<\/li>\n
  4. Easy user interface lets you manage, upload, create user, etc in a very easy fashion.<\/li>\n
  5. A special feature is that, even user can undelete the accidentally deleted data from Trash, is not it easy to handle and maintain.<\/li>\n
  6. The search feature in owncloud is very responsive which is done in background and lets user search by name as well as file type.<\/li>\n
  7. Contacts are organised in categories\/group hence easy to access contacts on the basis of friends, co-worker, Family, etc.<\/li>\n
  8. You can now access external storage be it Dropbox, FTP or anything else by mounting.<\/li>\n

    1. Accessibility Improvement for app\u2019s management page, updater app and search.<\/li>\n

    3. Storage configuration file can be tuned to a higher level in this release.<\/li>\n
    4. Apps management is now intelligent enough to store App\u2019s dependency in XML file from where Apps container can solve the dependencies automatically.<\/li>\n
    5. Documentation improved to next level, PDF viewer improved with the implementation of new version of PDF.js.<\/li>\n
    6. Improved user management and structured settings and admin page improved.<\/li>\n
    7. Link sharing has now gone better by shortening.<\/li>\n
    8. Overall performance improved as compared to previous version.<\/li>\n
    9. Contacts importing improved.<\/li>\n
    10. Federated (United) cloud sharing which means setting up of shared folder across server is a cake walk. This feature makes it possible to collaborate organizations with the control at local owncloud deployment server.<\/li>\n

    12. Set favorite icon to files and folder so that it is easy to sort and edit.<\/li>\n
    13. Add files to favorites so that it is easy to find them later.<\/li>\n
    14. Admin can edit email address of users, sort and select user as well as rename group.<\/li>\n
    15. Basic feature includes \u2013 connecting to owncloud over HTTP(s), browse for files\/folder in explorer, automatic sync, sharing files with other users, sync folders from PC, Pause and resume downloads and uploads and configure proxy.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      System Requirements<\/h3>\n

      For higher performance, stability, support, and full functionality we recommend following things:<\/p>\n

      1. Minimum 128MB RAM, recommend 512MB.<\/li>\n
      2. RHEL\/CentOS 7\/6, Fedora 18-23, Ubuntu 16.04-12.04, Debian 8\/7, etc.<\/li>\n
      3. MySQL\/MariaDB<\/li>\n
      4. PHP 5.4 +<\/li>\n
      5. Apache 2.4 with mod_php<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        Step 1: Install ownCloud Storage in Linux<\/h3>\n

        In order to setup your own personal cloud storage (ownCloud<\/strong>), you must have\u00a0LAMP<\/strong>\u00a0(Linux<\/strong>,\u00a0Apache<\/strong>,\u00a0MySQL\/MariaDB<\/strong>,\u00a0PHP<\/strong>) stack installed. Other than LAMP stack you might need\u00a0Perl<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Python<\/strong>\u00a0based upon your use.<\/p>\n

        On Debian\/Ubuntu\/Linux Mint<\/h5>\n

        Step 2: Create Cloud Database<\/h3>\n
        Once you setup\u00a0LAMP<\/strong>\u00a0stack on your personal box, just login to your database (MySQL<\/strong>, here).<\/p>\n
        # mysql -u root -p<\/pre>\n
        Enter mysql\u00a0root<\/strong>\u00a0password. Now we will be creating a database (say\u00a0cloud<\/strong>).<\/p>\n
        mysql> create database cloud ; \r\nQuery OK, 1 row affected (0.00 sec)<\/pre>\n
        It is not a good idea to access your database from\u00a0root<\/strong>, hence grant all the permission to a normal user (say\u00a0tecmint<\/strong>).<\/p>\n
        mysql> grant all on cloud.* to tecmint@localhost identified by 'my_password'; \r\nQuery OK, 0 rows affected (0.00 sec)<\/pre>\n
        Step 3: Download and Install ownCloud Application<\/h3>\n
        Now its time to Download latest ownCloud (i.e version\u00a08.0.0<\/strong>) application using below link.<\/p>\n
          \n
        1. http:\/\/owncloud.org\/install\/<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
          Alternatively, you may use\u00a0wget command<\/a>\u00a0to download the source tar-ball package.<\/p>\n
          # wget https:\/\/download.owncloud.org\/community\/owncloud-9.0.0.tar.bz2<\/pre>\n
          You may alternatively install from binary package using\u00a0APT<\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0YUM<\/strong>. The installation instruction can be found at:<\/p>\n
            \n
          1. Install ownCloud using APT or YUM<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
            However we choose the\u00a0TAR<\/strong>\u00a0package which is universally accepted and works on most of the known system.<\/p>\n
            After Downloading the owncloud package, move it to your\u00a0Apache<\/strong>\u00a0working directory, which is\u00a0\/var\/www<\/strong>\u00a0(for\u00a0Debian<\/strong>) and\u00a0\/var\/www\/html<\/strong>\u00a0(for\u00a0RedHat<\/strong>).<\/p>\n
            # cp owncloud-9.0.0.tar.bz2 \/var\/www\/\t\t[For Debian based Systems]\r\n# cp owncloud-9.0.0.tar.bz2 \/var\/www\/html\/\t[For RedHat based Systems]<\/pre>\n
            Next, extract the package using\u00a0tar command<\/a>\u00a0as shown below.<\/p>\n
            # tar -jxvf owncloud-9.0.0.tar.bz2<\/pre>\n
            Since the\u00a0TAR<\/strong>\u00a0Archive is extracted you may remove the Archive.<\/p>\n
            # rm -rf owncloud-9.0.0.tar.bz2<\/pre>\n
            We might need to change the file permission of\u00a0owncloud<\/strong>, in our\u00a0Apache<\/strong>\u00a0working directory.<\/p>\n
            # chmod -R 777 owncloud\/<\/pre>\n
            Note<\/strong>: Remember we are giving\u00a0read<\/strong>,\u00a0write<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0execute<\/strong>\u00a0permission to all, which is although risky but this time needed since several configuration file would be written automatically. We later need to change permission to\u00a0755<\/strong>, once the setup is finished.<\/p>\n
            Step 4: Configuring Apache for ownCloud<\/h3>\n
            For security purpose\u00a0ownCloud<\/strong>\u00a0uses\u00a0Apache<\/strong>\u2018s\u00a0.htaccess<\/strong>\u00a0files, in order to use them. We need to enable two Apache modules\u00a0mod_rewrite<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0mod_headers<\/strong>\u00a0for ownCloud to function properly. Type the following command to enable these modules under\u00a0Debian<\/strong>\u00a0based systems only, for\u00a0RedHat<\/strong>\u00a0systems they are enabled by default.<\/p>\n
            # a2enmod rewrite\r\n# a2enmod headers<\/pre>\n
            Additionally, we need to enable\u00a0mod_rewrite rules<\/strong>\u00a0to work properly under\u00a0Apache<\/strong>\u2018s main configuration file. Open the Apache global configuation file.<\/p>\n
            # nano \/etc\/apache2\/sites-available\/default\t[For Debian based Systems]\r\n# vi \/etc\/httpd\/conf\/httpd.conf\t\t\t[For RedHat based Systems]<\/pre>\n
            There, find \u201cAllowOverride None<\/strong>\u201d and change this to \u201cAllowOverride All<\/strong>\u201d as shown.<\/p>\n

            Change this to:<\/p>\n
            AllowOverride All<\/pre>\n
            Now we need to restart\u00a0Apache<\/strong>\u00a0to reload new changes.<\/p>\n
            # service apache2 restart\t\t\t[For Debian based Systems]\r\n# service httpd restart\t\t\t\t[For RedHat based Systems]<\/pre>\n
            Step 5: Access ownCloud Application<\/h3>\n
            Now you can acess your very personal cloud storage at:<\/p>\n
            http:\/\/localhost\/owncloud\r\nOR\r\nhttp:\/\/your-ip-address\/owncloud<\/pre>\n
            Once you get the Owncloud page, you need to create an\u00a0admin<\/strong>\u00a0account and a\u00a0Data<\/strong>\u00a0folder location, where all files\/folders will be stored (or leave default location i.e.\u00a0\/var\/www\/owncloud\/data<\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0\/var\/www\/html\/owncloud\/data<\/strong>). Next, you need to enter mysql\u00a0database username<\/strong>,\u00a0password<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0database name<\/strong>, refer the screenshot below.<\/p>\n

            You may now\u00a0add folder<\/strong>,\u00a0sync media files<\/strong>\u00a0be it pictures, images and videos from the mobile application. Owncloud lets you add new user, and sync calendar, contacts, Media files, etc.<\/p>\n

            Upgrading to Owncloud 9 from Older Versions<\/h3>\n
            To update earlier version of your owncloud to\u00a09<\/strong>, you need to first update the old owncloud to latest point release of the same version.<\/p>\n
            For example, if you\u2019re using\u00a0owncloud 6.0.xy<\/strong>\u00a0(where \u2018xy<\/strong>\u2018 is the version number), you need to first update to\u00a06.0.x<\/strong>of the same series, and then you able to upgrade to\u00a0owncloud 7<\/strong>\u00a0using the following instructions.<\/p>\n
            Update Owncloud 6.0.xx to 6.0.2<\/h4>\n
            1. Making proper backup of everything is always suggested.<\/p>\n
            2. Enable the updater plugin (if it is disabled).<\/p>\n
            3. Go to Admin Panel and fire update.<\/p>\n
            4. Refresh page using \u2018Ctrl+F5\u2018, you\u2019re done.<\/p>\n
            If above procedure doesn\u2019t worked, you can do a full upgrade to update to the newest point release (see \u2018Upgrade<\/strong>\u2018 instructions below).<\/p>\n
            Else, if you\u2019re already using\u00a0Owncloud 7 or 8<\/strong>\u00a0and want to update to\u00a0Owncloud 9<\/strong>, you can follow the below same \u2018Upgrade\u2019 instructions to get the latest version of Owncloud.<\/p>\n
            Upgrading OwnCloud 8 to OwnCloud 9 Latest Release<\/h4>\n
            1.<\/strong>\u00a0Update your owncloud version to latest point release of your version.<\/p>\n
            2.<\/strong>\u00a0Not to Mention, Make a full backup before upgrading.<\/p>\n
            3.<\/strong>\u00a0Download the latest tarball using wget command.<\/p>\n
            # wget http:\/\/download.owncloud.org\/community\/owncloud-latest.tar.bz2<\/pre>\n
            4.<\/strong>\u00a0Deactivate all native and third party Applications and plugins.<\/p>\n
            5.<\/strong>\u00a0Delete Everything from the owncloud Directory except\u00a0DATA<\/b>\u00a0and\u00a0CONFIG<\/b>\u00a0directory.<\/p>\n
            NOTE<\/strong>: Don\u2019t touch DATA and CONFIG directory.<\/p>\n
            6.<\/strong>\u00a0Untar the tar-ball and copy everything to the root of your owncloud directory within your working directory.<\/p>\n
            7.<\/strong>\u00a0Grant required permissions and run Upgrade from the Next page and its done!.<\/p>\n
            8.<\/strong>\u00a0Don\u2019t forget to install and enable Third party Application and plug-ins only after checking the compatibility with the current version.<\/p>\n
