Android<\/b>\u00a0(x86<\/b>) is a project which aims to port Android system to Intel x86 processors to let users install it easily on any computer, the way they do this is by taking android source code, patching it to work on Intel x86 processors and some laptops and tablets.<\/p>\n

Install Android 4.4 KitKat in Linux<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

A few days ago, the project released \u201cAndroid KitKat 4.4 RC2<\/b>\u201d, and today we will explain how to install it on\u00a0VirtualBox<\/b>, there is a problem that the mouse pointer doesn\u2019t work in android in VirtualBox, but you may use this guide to install it beside other systems as a main system and the mouse should work I guess, otherwise we\u2019ll use the keyboard.<\/p>\n

Step 1: Install VirtualBox in Linux<\/h3>\n

1.<\/strong>\u00a0VirtualBox is available to install easily via official repositories in most Linux distributions, to install it on Ubuntu run.<\/p>\n

$ sudo apt-get install virtualbox<\/pre>\n
For other Linux distributions like\u00a0RHEL<\/b>,\u00a0CentOS<\/b>\u00a0and\u00a0Fedora<\/b>, use the following article to install Virtualbox.<\/p>\n

  1. Install VirtualBox in RHEL, CentOS and Fedora<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
    Step 2: Download and Install Android 4.4 KitKat in Virtualbox<\/h3>\n
    2.<\/strong>\u00a0This is an easy step, just download\u00a0Android 4.4 x86 Kit Kat<\/b>\u00a0file from the\u00a0androud Sourceforge.net<\/a>\u00a0project.<\/p>\n
    3.<\/strong>\u00a0To install\u00a0Android 4.4 kitkat<\/b>\u00a0on VirtualBox, you need first to boot from the\u00a0.iso<\/b>\u00a0image that you downloaded, to do so, open\u00a0VirtualBox<\/b>, Click on new to create a new virtual machine, and choose the settings as follow.<\/p>\n

    4.<\/strong>\u00a0Then it will ask you to choose a\u00a0Memory<\/b>\u00a0size for the machine, Android 4.4 kitkat needs\u00a01GB<\/b>\u00a0of\u00a0RAM<\/b>\u00a0to work perfectly, but I will choose\u00a0512MB<\/b>\u00a0since I only have 1GB of RAM on my computer.<\/p>\n

    5.<\/strong>\u00a0Now select \u201cCreate a virtual hard drive now<\/b>\u201d to create a new one.<\/p>\n

    6.<\/strong>\u00a0It will now ask you for the type of the new virtual hard drive, select\u00a0VDI<\/b>.<\/p>\n

    7.<\/strong>\u00a0Now choose the size of the virtual hard drive, you may choose any size you want, no less than\u00a04GB<\/b>\u00a0so the system can be installed correctly beside any future apps that you want to install.<\/p>\n

    8.<\/strong>\u00a0Now that\u2019s your first virtual machine is created, now to boot from the\u00a0.iso<\/b>\u00a0file that you downloaded, select the virtual machine from the list on the left, click on\u00a0Settings<\/b>, and go for \u201cstorage<\/b>\u201d, do as follow and select the\u00a0.iso<\/b>image of\u00a0android 4.4 kitkat RC2<\/b>.<\/p>\n

    9.<\/strong>\u00a0Click on\u00a0OK<\/b>, and start the machine to boot the\u00a0.iso<\/b>\u00a0image, choose \u201cInstallation<\/b>\u201d to start installing the system on the virtual machine.<\/p>\n

    11.<\/strong>\u00a0Now you will be prompted\u00a0cfdisk<\/b>\u00a0which is a partitioning tool that we will use to create a new hard drive, so we can install android 4.4 on it, Click on \u201cNew<\/b>\u201d.<\/p>\n

    14.<\/strong>\u00a0Now, we have to make the new hard drive bootable in order to be able to write changes to the disk, click on \u201cBootable<\/b>\u201d to give the bootable flag to the new partition, you won\u2019t notice any changes in fact but the bootable flag will be given to that partition.<\/p>\n

    15.<\/strong>\u00a0After that, click on \u201cWrite<\/b>\u201d to write the changes to the hard drive.<\/p>\n

    19.<\/strong>\u00a0You will be asked now if you want to install GRUB bootloader, of course you will select\u00a0Yes<\/b>, because if you don\u2019t, you won\u2019t be able to boot the new system, so choose \u201cYes<\/b>\u201d and hit\u00a0Enter<\/b>.<\/p>\n

    21.<\/strong>\u00a0The installer will start it\u2019s mission\u2026 after the installer finishes the job, choose\u00a0Reboot<\/b>, in my test, the \u201cRun-Android x86<\/b>\u201d didn\u2019t work for me, so you have to reboot.<\/p>\n

    22.<\/strong>\u00a0Now that\u2019s we installed\u00a0Android 4.4 KitKat RC2<\/b>\u00a0on our hard drive, the problem is now that VirtualBox will keep loading the\u00a0.iso<\/b>\u00a0image file instead of booting from the virtual hard drive, so to fix this problem, go to\u00a0Settings<\/b>, under \u201cstorage<\/b>\u201d select the\u00a0.iso<\/b>\u00a0file and remove it from the booting menu.<\/p>\n

You will see a screen like this, Now the problem is, that the Mouse doesn\u2019t work in\u00a0android 4.4 KitKat<\/b>, that means that we\u2019ll be using our skills in keyboard, first choose the\u00a0language<\/b>\u00a0you want using the\u00a0Up<\/b>\u00a0and\u00a0Down<\/b>\u00a0keys in the keyboard, and to go the next step, hit the\u00a0Right<\/b>\u00a0arrow key and click\u00a0Enter<\/b>.<\/p>\n
