AWS boss insists Amazon will have dumped Oracle database by end of 2019."},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Clock&#8217;s ticking on Ellison&#8217;s smack talk<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/regmedia.co.uk\/2015\/07\/03\/boxing_gloves.jpg?x=442&amp;y=293&amp;crop=1\" alt=\"Boxing_gloves\" width=\"442\" height=\"293\" \/><\/p>\n<p>re:Invent AWS boss Andy Jassy has doubled down on claims Amazon will &#8220;be done&#8221; with Oracle databases by 2019, and used his Re:Invent keynote to throw shade at Big Red.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at Amazon&#8217;s main tech conference in Las Vegas this week, Jassy said that the world of &#8220;old guard commercial-grade databases&#8221; has been &#8220;miserable&#8221; for enterprises for the past 20 years.<\/p>\n<p>Targeting cloud rival Oracle, Jassy said these legacy database vendors are too expensive and don&#8217;t serve customers well, pointing to aggressive audits and proprietary systems that lock in customers.<\/p>\n<p>He also rubbished Big Red&#8217;s market share, showing a slide that was mostly AWS orange, followed by Microsoft at 13.3 per cent, Alibaba at 4.6 per cent and Google at 3.3 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>Oracle was identified by a pop-up Larry Ellison, appearing like a small cartoon villain, in a segment of &#8220;other vendors&#8221;.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Amusing slide from Andy Jassy in his keynote showing market share (AWS being the big orange segment). <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AWSreInvent?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@AWSreInvent<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/fLCHYRxsJy\">pic.twitter.com\/fLCHYRxsJy<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 TechMarketView (@TechMarketView) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TechMarketView\/status\/1067814465293422595?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 28, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The trading of blows is customary at vendor conferences \u2013 Ellison spends huge chunks of his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.co.uk\/2018\/10\/23\/oracle_openworld_ellison_keynote\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">keynotes<\/a> trash-talking AWS, with the common refrain that Amazon still uses Oracle&#8217;s databases.<\/p>\n<p>The online marketplace giant&#8217;s efforts to shift off its competitor&#8217;s tech is well documented \u2013 less well evidenced \u2013 but that hasn&#8217;t stopped Jassy from expanding on claims the firm is making strides.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2018\/11\/28\/amazon-will-be-off-all-oracle-databases-by-end-of-2019-says-aws-chief.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CNBC<\/a> at re:Invent, he said: &#8220;We&#8217;re virtually done moving away from Oracle on the database side&#8230; I think by the end of 2019 or mid-2019 we&#8217;ll be done.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He claimed that 88 per cent of databases running Oracle will be on Amazon&#8217;s DynamoDB or Aurora databases by January, and that 97 per cent of mission-critical databases will be on DynamoDB or Aurora by the end of next year.<\/p>\n<p>Jassy also reiterated a previous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.co.uk\/2018\/11\/12\/stay_classy_jassy_gets_sassy_with_larry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tweet<\/a> that Amazon moved its data warehouse from Oracle to Redshift on 1 November.<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere at the conference, AWS announced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.co.uk\/2018\/11\/28\/aws_self_driving_car\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">DeepRacer<\/a>, a tiny radio-controlled &#8220;self-driving&#8221; car \u2013 which comes hot on the heels of Ellison&#8217;s comments at OpenWorld that Amazon&#8217;s database was semi-autonomous at best.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That&#8217;s like a semi-autonomous car. You get in, drive it&#8230; and you die,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.co.uk\/2018\/10\/23\/oracle_openworld_ellison_keynote\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> Ellison.
