Whenever we want to move to a new version, we also want to transport our installed software, PPAs, apt-cache packages, and application settings &amp; configurations with us. Moving to a new version without taking all this stuff along means that we need to install and configure all our applications again from scratch. This can seem quite frustrating and you can still miss out something that you had to set up. How about hiring someone who can securely pack all your stuff, transfer it to your new abode and set up all the things when and where they are needed. Aptik or \u2018Automated Package Backup and Restore\u2019 is a GUI as well as command line tool that backs up all your PPAs, installed software, application settings and much more and helps you in restoring them to your new release of Ubuntu.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/header>\n<div id=\"main\" class=\"clearfix\">\n<div class=\"inner-wrap\">\n<div id=\"primary\">\n<div id=\"content\" class=\"clearfix\">\n<article id=\"post-2995\" class=\"post-2995 post type-post status-publish format-standard has-post-thumbnail hentry category-linux category-ubuntu\">\n<div class=\"entry-content clearfix\">\n<h2>How can Aptik Help?<\/h2>\n<p>With Aptik, you can do the following backups only through a click or two:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Launchpad PPAs from your current system and restore them to the new system<\/li>\n<li>All installed software from your current system and restore them to the new system<\/li>\n<li>Apt-cache downloaded packages from your current system and restore them to the new system<\/li>\n<li>App configurations from your current system and restore them to the new system<\/li>\n<li>Your home directory including the configuration files and restore them to the new system<\/li>\n<li>Themes and icons from the \/usr\/share director and restore them to the new system<\/li>\n<li>Backup selective items from your system through one-click and restore them to your new system<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In this article, we will explain how you can install Aptik command line and Aptik GTK(UI tool) to your Ubuntu through the command line. We will then tell you how to backup your stuff from the old system and restore it to your new Ubuntu. In the end, we will also explain how you can uninstall Aptik from your system if you want to remove it from your new system after restoring your applications and other useful stuff.<\/p>\n<p>We have run the commands and procedures mentioned in this article on a Ubuntu 18.04 LTS system.<\/p>\n<h2>Installing Aptik and Aptik GTK<\/h2>\n<p>We will be installing Aptik CLI and Aptik GTK through the Ubuntu command line, the Terminal. You can open the Terminal application either through the system Dash or the Ctrl+Alt+T shortcut.<\/p>\n<p>First add the PPA repository, through which we will be installing Aptik, by using the following command:<\/p>\n<pre>$ sudo apt-add-repository -y ppa:teejee2008\/ppa<\/pre>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2996 lazy-loaded\" src=\"https:\/\/vitux.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/word-image-9.png\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 667px) 100vw, 667px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/vitux.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/word-image-9.png 667w, https:\/\/vitux.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/word-image-9-300x68.png 300w\" alt=\"Add Aptik Ubuntu Repository\" width=\"667\" height=\"152\" data-lazy-type=\"image\" data-src=\"https:\/\/vitux.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/word-image-9.png\" data-srcset=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Please note that only an authorized user can add\/remove and update software on Ubuntu.<\/p>\n<p>Now update your system\u2019s repository index with that of the Internet by entering the following command as sudo:<\/p>\n<pre>$ sudo apt-get update<\/pre>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2997 lazy-loaded\" src=\"https:\/\/vitux.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/word-image-10.png\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 636px) 100vw, 636px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/vitux.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/word-image-10.png 636w, https:\/\/vitux.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/word-image-10-300x76.png 300w\" alt=\"Update package lists\" width=\"636\" height=\"162\" data-lazy-type=\"image\" data-src=\"https:\/\/vitux.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/word-image-10.png\" data-srcset=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Finally, enter the following command in order to install Aptik:<\/p>\n<pre>$ sudo apt-get install aptik<\/pre>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2998 lazy-loaded\" src=\"https:\/\/vitux.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/word-image-11.png\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 685px) 100vw, 685px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/vitux.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/word-image-11.png 685w, https:\/\/vitux.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/word-image-11-300x127.png 300w\" alt=\"Install Aptik\" width=\"685\" height=\"290\" data-lazy-type=\"image\" data-src=\"https:\/\/vitux.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/word-image-11.png\" data-srcset=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The system will prompt you with a Y\/n option to confirm installation. Select your choices one by one or click the Backup all Items button in order to backup all options that are mentioned.<\/p>\n<h3>Restore<\/h3>\n<p>From your new system, open Aptik GTK, select the Restore option under Backup Option.
