{"id":8460,"date":"2019-01-22T15:17:14","date_gmt":"2019-01-22T15:17:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.appservgrid.com\/paw92\/?p=8460"},"modified":"2019-03-09T07:24:03","modified_gmt":"2019-03-09T07:24:03","slug":"linux-5-0-is-finally-arriving-in-march","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.appservgrid.com\/paw92\/index.php\/2019\/01\/22\/linux-5-0-is-finally-arriving-in-march\/","title":{"rendered":"Linux 5.0 Is Finally Arriving In March"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With last week\u2019s release of <a href=\"http:\/\/lkml.iu.edu\/hypermail\/linux\/kernel\/\/1901.0\/02536.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Linux 5.0-rc1<\/a>, it\u2019s confirmed that Linus Torvalds has finally decided to adopt the 5.x series.<\/p>\n<p>The kernel enthusiasts and developers have been waiting for this change since the release of <a href=\"https:\/\/fossbytes.com\/linux-kernel-4-17-features-download\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Linux 4.17<\/a>. Back then, Linus Torvalds hinted at the possibility of the jump to place after 4.20 release.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI suspect that around 4.20 \u2013 which is I run out of fingers and toes to keep track of minor releases, and thus start getting mightily confused \u2013 I\u2019ll switch over,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>In another past update, he said that version 5.0 would surely happen someday but it would be \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/fossbytes.com\/linus-torvalds-linux-kernel-5-0-release-date-meaningless\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">meaningless<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Coming back to the present day, Linus has said that the jump to 5.0 doesn\u2019t mean anything and he simply \u201cran out of fingers and<br \/>\ntoes to count on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe numbering change is not indicative of anything special,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, he also mentioned that there aren\u2019t any major features that prompted this numbering either. \u201cSo go wild. Make up your own reason for why it\u2019s 5.0,\u201d he further added.<\/p>\n<p>Linus Torvalds<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGo test. Kick the tires. Be the first kid on your block running a 5.0 pre-release kernel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now that we\u2019re done with all the \u201csecret\u201d reasons behind this move to 5.x series, we can expect Linux 5.0 to arrive in early March.<\/p>\n<p>There are many features being lined up for this release and I\u2019d covering those in the release announcement post.
